Early on a Saturday morning in April, six MIT student groups and the ESI team gathered on the McDermott Dot to begin set up for the third annual Environmental Solutions Initiative Earth Day Celebration.
In March, each group submitted a proposal for a sustainability-related activity to be displayed at the celebration. By 9 o’clock on that Saturday, the large tent housed nine different activities, including a take-home terrarium station (UA Sustainability), a touch tank with crabs (MIT Sea Grant Researchers), a virtual reality earth simulation station (ComMIT), an interactive cave display and rock identification table (E-SAC), a waste-sorting and carbon emissions trivia game (GSC Sustainability), and a water collection demonstration station (Engineers Without Borders).
Throughout the course of the day over 280 toddlers, teens, and adults filed through the activities, taking home water bottles, reusable bags, cookies, balloons, granola bars, and more. Outside the tent in the April sun, the attendees of all ages were taught how to juggle courtesy of the MIT Juggling Club.
